When you’re implementing safeguards to protect your users from becoming a victim of an attack, mail hygiene is a great place to start.
In fact, the majority of threats sneak their way through into your network by an unsuspecting user providing a malicious source with their login information or downloading a file from one.
These types of emails are one form of email spam. Other forms of spam include unharmful yet unwanted mass emails (think the electronic version of junk mail) and emails you receive from retailers that you don’t open,
To protect your users from spam, you need anti-spam software.
While you may receive some anti-spam protection through your Internet service provider (ISP) or email program, many spammers and attackers have found ways to sneak their emails through those rudimentary spam filters.
The KR Group’s security advisers and managed services engineers recommend implementing a third-party anti-spam software to further protect your users. Three we recommend are:
- Mimecast Anti-spam is the best because of its features and level of protection.
- Proofpoint Email Protection is great because of its AI and machine learning.
- AppRiver Email Security is a good option managed service clients or other users wanting easy-to-use software.
All of these anti-spam programs are cloud-based, which gives them advantages (such as automatic updates, reduced bandwidth, and fast response) over traditional anti-spam on your hardware.
1. Mimecast Anti-spam
Mimecast’s anti-spam software is part of their email security solution, which includes targeted threat protection to prevent users from clicking on malicious URLs and tools for content control, DLP tools, secure messaging, and sending large files.
When it comes to spam, Mimecast promises to:
- Stop 99% of it from entering inboxes
- Have a 0.0001% false-positive rate
- Block 100% of malware attacks
Mimecast also helps users de-clutter their inboxes with filing tools for graymail like newsletters and mailing lists. It also gives administrators central and granular control over anti-spam policies.
On Gartner Peer Insights, Mimecast earned 4.4 out of 5 stars. It was best scored for its product capabilities, and product functionality and performance was the top reason customers choose Mimecast.
At the end of the day, Mimecast earns our recognition as the best anti-spam software on the market because of the features it offers and the protection it provides.
2. Proofpoint Email Protection
Gartner Peer Insights reviews rank Proofpoint slightly higher than Mimecast with 4.6 out of 5 stars. Like Mimecast, product functionality and performance was the top deciding factor for users, and those users rated product capabilities and integration and deployment as the best components of Proofpoint.
Proofpoint identifies threats by using multi-layered content analysis.
Its signature-based detection prevents known threats while its dynamic reputation analysis (machine learning) analyzes IP addresses to determine if emails are safe or unsafe.
When deployed in the cloud, Proofpoint Email Protection:
- Provides 99.999% service availability
- Blocks or redirects 99 % of spam
- Ensures 100% virus protection
Proofpoint also works by securing your mail and protecting users and data from imposter emails, phishing scams, malware, bulk mail, and other types of spam.
Proofpoint’s AI integration is what makes it stand out as a solid option for anti-spam protection.
AppRiver Email Security
AppRiver has earned our recognition as an anti-spam provider with quality protection, especially when it comes to managed IT services clients.
It has 4.3 out of 5 stars on Spiceworks, so it ranks slightly below the other anti-spam we’ve reviewed in this article. (There aren’t any reviews for AppRiver on Gartner Peer Insights.)
Generally, Mimecast and Proofpoint provide better protection, but AppRiver stands out with how it provides accessibility when it comes it managed IT services.
Even though it’s in third place in this article, even when it comes to business use outside of managed services, AppRiver is still better than other anti-spam software on the market. It also provides better protection than relying on the basic anti-spam filters your ISP or email program provides.
With AppRiver, you’ll receive a daily report of spam, which is categorized as general spam, malware, released mail, and trash.
When analyzing your emails, AppRiver uses more than 60 filtering tests, including:
- Spear phishing
- SPF verification
- Domain key identified mail (DKIM) protocol verification
- Domain-based authentication reporting and conformance (DMARC) verification
- Additional sender verification checks
Overall, AppRiver increases its effectiveness with more than 8 million rules written by its technicians, who monitor and proactively adjust email security defenses 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Who should you choose?
Whether you choose Mimecast, Proofpoint, or AppRiver, you’ll have better protection for your email security.
One factor in deciding which anti-spam program to opt for is likely the cost:
- Mimecast starts pricing at $3.50 to $9 per user, depending on which version you choose.
- Proofpoint starts pricing at $1.50 to $5.33 per user, depending on which version you choose. They also offer a free trial.
- AppRiver starts pricing at a minimum of $50.
Your needs might help determine which one is best for you, as well. While all three options can be used for small and medium businesses, AppRiver stands out as anti-spam for MSPs because it provides daily reports and 24/7/365 monitoring of your email.
It’s also important to understand anti-spam is only one layer of the security you need to protect your assets. Check out the following articles for other solutions you should implement:
